The End….For Now

Posted by Steve

It’s been mentioned on Twitter, we talked briefly about it on the Big Honkin Show, and now I feel I need to make official to everyone via the website that my time in podcasting has come to an end.  For now at least.

The way I put it on Twitter was through the words of Shawn Michaels.  The first time he left the wrestling business, he said simply that he lost his smile.

Over the past few months, I have come to understand what he meant.  I love doing Geek Out Loud, Starkville’s House of El, The Big Honkin Show, and Round 3.   I said a couple of years ago that when all this began I just wanted to do a podcast.  I wanted an outlet to talk about all the things that I enjoy that I don’t really get to talk about too much with the people around me.  I never dreamed in a million years that so much good would come out of sitting in front of a microphone and droning on about movies, tv, and comics.  I have made some great friends, I have had a great time, and I got to live a dream I’ve had for a very long time.

Unfortunately, so much of what I do when it comes to podcasting and broadcasting requires that I am as chipper and upbeat as possible.  There have been times when I’ve just felt too tired or too down to think that I can get in the mental place to “bring it” for the listening audience, but I’ve always found that I could power through and have a good time.  Over the past few months, though, it’s been harder and harder to get to that point due to some personal things that have been going on coupled with a hectic work schedule. In short, I’ve lost my smile.  Watching television, movies, and reading comics became less and less of a hobby and more and more of a job.

In an effort to get my priorities straight and to try (again stealing from Shawn Michaels) find my smile again, I am stepping away from podcasting for the time being.

Thank you all for your support.  Thank you all for the e-mails, the well wishes, the good times, and the laughs.  I’m sorry that this all seems to come out of the blue and I’m sorry for letting those of you who look forward to good times with Derek, Buck, and I down.  Ultimately, please know how appreciative I am to every single one of you for your constant support.

Now, on to the logistics of my departure.  I have officially left Starkville’s House of El, The Big Honkin’ Show will air live on the radio one last time next Saturday, Round 3 is over, and we will do two more episodes of Geek Out Loud before September is over so as to end on the milestone 50th epiversary.

I know you, as I will be tuning in to Starkville’s House of El during what promises to be an amazing final season of Smallville.  As for The Big  Honkin Show and Geek Out Loud, don’t delete those feeds because (to pull another adage from Pro Wrestling) the only thing that’s for sure is nothing is for sure.

Again, thank you all, God Bless, May the Force Be With You, and where we’re going we don’t need roads.

You are a good and wise man, Steve. We wish you the best!

  2. Patti Says:

I am a little behind listening to my podcasts, so I didn’t know about this until now.

I definitely do wish you well. I totally understand that you have to do what’s best for you. I could always count on you to put me in a good mood, no matter what I was going through. While the podcasting world won’t be the same without you, I know I won’t be the same because I shared in your silliness, geeking out with you.

Thanks for more than I can even begin to write here. Please know you’ll always be in my prayers too. And I’ll be out there, listening like always.

Namaste. And may the Force truly be with you too.

  3. Allen Says:

Steve you do what you have to I can completely understand that. You were one of the first voices I heard when I started listening to podcasts and a big reason why I continued. Just don’t forget what a huge affect you had on your various audiences. Good luck and I hope I hear from you again.

  4. Kimber Says:

I’m tearing up but I understand why you are doing this – enjoy having a life!

But any chance on you coming back and doing the Smallville SERIES finale on SHoE?

  5. Michael Cohen Says:

Over the last few years, you’ve been a great source of entertainment and encouragement, and an even better friend. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I would not be the person I am, in the place I am in my life without your influence. And I’m immensely thankful for that.

You inspired myself, and many others to take that leap and start our own podcasts, websites, and blogs, and for that, the world owes you a great debt. Your time on SHoE has been some of the greatest entertainment ever released on the internet, and the community you’ve created around Geek Out Online and The Big Honkin’ Show is an achievement to be proud of.

I’ll say right now that I will be patiently awaiting your inevitable and triumphant return to the internet airwaves, and when that time comes, I’ll be more than happy to relaunch Geek Out Online with a brand-spanking-new website and all the fanfare that it deserves. You just let me know when.

For now, I’ll just say thank you for making Saturday mornings fun again, for your soothing dulcet tones, and for your years of hard work keeping smiles on our faces.

You’re the best around, and nothings ever gonna get you down!

P.S. Don’t be shy. The door is always open for you to come on Frontlines and to let your Geek Out as Loud as you want!

  6. Linda Wilkins Says:

Steve, I wish you all the best. Those of us that had the absolute pleasure of getting to “know” you through your many podcasts will always keep listening for your return…but for now, take care. I will always wear my Geek Out Loud t-shirt with pride, and I will never forget Edna or the Robot Lovin’ Act. Most importantly, I’d like you to remember that it’s never too late for chocolate pie!

    Peace my friend!

    Linda Wilkins

  7. Dustin Says:

Thanks for all the fun and laughs you have shared through your podcasts. You are a very talented individual. May God bless you.

  8. Dave Says:

“Well it’s goodbye to BigHonkin Stee-eeve / It’s good-byyyyyyye…” [/worst. chocolate pie song reference. ever.]

This makes a ton of sense. When the things you love become a job, you either quit your loves or you quit your job. You’re making the wiser choice. I blogged for 7 years, churning out post after post because i had a faithful few who read them consistently, to the point where i felt guilty for not posting enough. It stopped being fun. I started to resent it. And finally i realized that old cow needed to be killed. Boom. Done. Funny thing is, after a bit more than 6 months, i was able to come back to it, on my own terms again. I stopped doing it for feedback, or on anyone else’s timetable. I’m doing it for me, and I like it.

Just throwing it out there as the above poster did. Step away, find your smile, take some time to enjoy being a fan of the things you love instead of a commentator on them, and when the time feels right *cough*S10Finale*cough* consider coming back to this silliness.

It’s been grand, sir. Thanks for the fun, and God bless.

  9. Sundance Says:

You go Steve, You get your Groove Back and We all hope you return to be our HomeBoy from Outer Space.!

  10. Mark Howard Says:

Thank you for all the laughs and good times, Big Honkin. And thanks to Buck as well. Take care, and all the best for your future.

  11. Matt Says:

I’m not sure there’s much I can say here …

I’ve been following almost everything you do since Skynext.

On one hand it feels like I’m watching a good friend leaving on a jet plane and I don’t know when you’ll be back again …

but on the other hand I know that you need time to get your head right.

But as for finding that smile again … speaking as a writer myself, it may be a couple of weeks or even months, but you’re going to see or read something and the fanboy in you will take over and it’ll pull you back in. (Insert Godfather three refrence here)

SO I doubt this will be the last time we’ll see the Incredible Honkin!

So on that note I leave you with this.

  12. Aaron Henley Says:

Sir, I would just like to thank you for the many hours of listening enjoyment you have provided. You got my geek bone revived and now I love Superman and Hulk in ways I never thought possible. While I will miss hearing you on SHOE, I wish you the best and hope the future goes well with you.

And though we have never met and this is only my first response, take care my friend. The Force will be with you always.

Now hop on the train with Doc and ride to a promising future, and this may be the end for now, there’s always a To Be Continued….

  13. Nick Crivaro Says:

Hey Steve. I dont usually post or email, but I’ve listened to all your podcasts since they started. If this is something you want to do, I think that is great. When something you do for fun turns into a job, thats the sign its time to quit. Thanks for your years of podcasting and you have given me enough so that I can re-listen for years to come. Thanks buddy.

  14. Batmatt Says:

Well Big Honkin it’s been a ride. First I have to say I will miss the sound of your voice coming through my iPod. But I understand why you need to go because I have had to do the same thing in my life several times. I will always keep your feeds live hoping to hear the amazing laugh that always gets me laughing and hearing your insights that are truly unique. God Bless you and hope to hear you soon… we did with Derek. Get your smile back.

Signed a person who refuses to be just a listener because I am a fan of Steve Glossen.

  15. Dumblond Says:

I can’t even begin to tell you how many times you made my day by putting yourself out there into the podcast universe. Your laughter is infectious as is your passion for the things and people you care about. I know you will find your smile again. If that means that some day, your faithful audience will once again be able to smile along with you, we would be the lucky ones.
It takes courage to admit when enough is enough. Thank you for doing this for yourself. I will keep my subscriptions active and my fingers crossed that you will grace us once again with your dulcet tones.
Good luck to you, sir. And salt fries.

  16. Heseda Says:

    Mr. Honkin:

Thank you for all the laughs! Your work has not gone un-noticed sir!! Your smile is out there somewhere dude! You will find it soon enough. Enjoy your retirement.

Hec. – part of the GOL Nation!!

  17. Markkamp Says:

I thought I sensed a disturbance in the force. This makes me very sad. I’m going to miss hearing from you Steve. I found your superfluous optimism to be uplifting. I do hope to hear from GOL again. Good luck.

  18. Superclerk Says:

I await your return. Until then…

  19. Sara Says:

I just wanted to say thanks for all the good times and awesome fun memories you’ve given me. While I’ll miss the sound of your dulcet tones I hope you get your sparkle back.

Please don’t think you’ve let anyone down, you ABSOLUTELY haven’t. Not in any way. You do this for fun and once it stops being fun then it is time to step back and concentrate on other things.

It feels like I’m saying goodbye to an old and much loved friend, but instead I shall say see you soon. Find that giggle and have some quality time with Star Wars.

    Much love

    Sara. x

  20. Michael from Canada Says:

I will miss all the fun times! I think I first heard you on SHOE and I have followed everything you’ve done from Round 3 to the Forcecast to The Big Honkin’ Show. Thanks for your time and effort. It’s much appreciated!

Looking forward to hearing you sometime in the future whenever that may be. MTFBWY.

  21. BigJC Says:

I am a big fan of all your podcasts and am sad to hear this news. It was great to listen to you and you provided me with a great number of hours of entertainment. It was great to listen to you on my iPod and you got me many tough days at work. I will pray for you and surely hope you find your smile and return someday.

  22. Harry Rears Says:

    Hey Steve,

Thanks for the fun, it’s been a blast. Hope you find your smile, you helped me find mine.

  23. donald Says:

sorry to see you go Steve. I just wanted to say thanks for the many entertaining hours of podcasts you have done, especially Sky Next and the Big Honkin Show. All the best.

and I hope you find your smile again.

  24. Beau Says:

I can’t thank you enough for the service you have provided for so many. Its more than fair for someone who has brought so many smiles to others to take all the time he needs to find his own. Even if this is the end your fans will be here if you need anything from us. Please don’t hesitate to aks!

  25. danocamera Says:

    Hey Steve!

Like so many others, I discovered you (and Derek) through Skynext before I devoured the entire Geek Out Loud back catalog; tuned in each week to The Big Honkin’ Show; feverishly awaited each new episode of Round Three and in the summer of 2009, when faced with no new episodes of Skynext, I watched the first 8 seasons of Smallville so that SHOE would be more relevant when I began listening to that. You helped me get through many nights when I worked a 3rd shift job!

As much as I hate to see you go on a podcasting hiatus, I’m glad that you recognized that you needed to step away to keep your pleasant disposition and continue loving the things you love before you grew to resent them.

Thank you for being you and keep movin’ right along! See ya Steve!
    – Daniel Simonson

  26. Dave Says:

This seems to happen to a lot of podcasters who get really popular. I feel for you, and wish you get your smile back and soon. Until then, stay geek, and remember there are hundreds, if not thousands, of fans (that feel like friends) who will miss you.

BTW, PLEASE come back to SHoE for the Series Finale. If you feel up to it, how could SHoE end without Big Honkin?

  27. Em Says:

Now I know how Charlie Brown felt when he was asked to step up to the podium at Snoopy’s “Goodbye” party in “Snoopy, Come Home.” What do you say to someone who’s (in a weird, one-sided way) become a companion you love to listen to and “discuss” common interests with, when it’s time for them to leave? I will definitely miss listening to you and your seemingly unending enthusiasm for all things geek – I haven’t contributed much to this wonderful global community, but listening to this show has uncovered so many other “new” things for me to geek out about. I’m still finding more things to get excited about all of the time, so I hope that as you take some time away from “running the show” you’ll find that little spark to get the geek-fire roaring again so hot you’ll have to resurface to the Interwebs in order to vent off the steam generated. Take a break and find your smile, Steve… I think we’ve all gotten enough from you that we could each afford to give you one back. 🙂

  28. Shane Says:

You will be missed. Thanks for everything.

  29. Becki Says:

Good luck, Steve! Thank you so much for the laughs you have given us and for all the good things you have done. You truly are a great person and you will be missed. I think I can speak for us all when I say that even though we don’t know you, we think of you as a friend. I hope you find your smile again and I wish you the best. God bless you in all you do.

  30. Tom Spangler Says:

I have enjoyed listening to you and you are the reason that Jay and I started The Unknown Regions. I hope that your absence isn’t to long. I will be praying that everything works out for you and you’ll be back soon.
And as Obi-Wan’s spirit told Luke…
“The Force will be with you…always.”

    Thanks for everything.

  31. Craig Voysey Says:

    Hey Steve!

I’m a relatively late comer to your Podcasts, but have loved driving along listening to you entertain and have a laugh. I’ll miss those long drives to work with you coming from my stereo.

I congratulate you on making a tough choice to get your life back to how it was – you said you lived a long held dream. Now it’s time for you to pay attention to everything else in life.

I’ll keep the feeds in iTunes, and hope to see you down the track!

May the Force be with you!

  32. Jeanne Says:

Thank you Steve, and thanks for taking care of yourself. As the wife of a “person of mood” (aka “clinically moody”), I can sort of imagine how difficult this all has been for you. You did a great job of pulling it all together for others, now it’s time to take some time for yourself. At least you’ll always have Edna there to take care of your every need. 🙂

  33. Scott Says:

Steve I thank you for all your efforts in the past. For what it is worth I will miss you and your spirit more than you will know. I work in law enforcement, and have found a safe haven from the things I see in your attitude and love of all things geek, and your efforts to create a safe place for others. It is a rare, rare gift to have the ambition to do that. I hope you can recharge your batteries and soul to the level you desire. I will as I say miss you, but will also look forward to your return. Again for what it is worth, I have great faith in your future.

  34. Cody Says:

Steve I just came over from SHOE to wish you the best on your endeavors. You can make me laugh like few people can and if taking time away means one day that might happen again, then take all the time you need. You will not be forgotten!

  35. Clifton House Says:

Like everyone else, I just wanted to say thanks for everything. I found you through a guest spot you did on Tenth Wonder, and your passion and dynamic recounting of the heroes journey and your philosophical critique blew me away.

From there I went to GOL, BHS, and R3. Loved it all. Especially your push to get on Force cast, and your eventual triumph as clone wars roundtable super star.

I do hope to see you back, but totally understand where you’re coming from.

Best of luck to you in all your endeavors.

  36. Audrey Saxton Says:

Big Honkin’ Steve, Thank you so much for all the laughs you have given me. I truly hope that you are able to get things worked out. I know you will be back when the time is right. My prayers are with you. Good Luck

  37. Skippy Says:

Thanks Big Honkin for the safe place to GOL. What a joy I’ve had listening to your podcast. I too am a child of the 80’s and you brought me back to some great memeories. From listening to your podcasts I would think – Big Honkin is someone I could see myself being friends with.

May the force be with you.

  38. Mike Says:

    Mr. Steve…

Wanted to give great thanks for all of the laughs that you provided. I am a SHoE listener and huge Steve fan. I was even lucky enough to have you read an email of mine on SHoE. As someone on the SHoE site said…here is to hoping that “our” Michael Rosenbaum comes back for the finale.

May the schwartz be with you

  39. victoria Says:

I’m a podcaster myself and I know what it’s like when you are having personal issues and work issues that force you to step away from the mic. It was great Steve thanks for the great shows you’ve put out.

  40. michelle Manchester UK Says:

Ilmiss you and Buck but i wish u well and hope that maybe one day ?? you will come back to cheer us up again
    Take care guys xx

  41. Jeff Lane Says:

You said you were sorry for “letting us down”. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. You have spent so many hours lifting us up and ensuring we (your listeners) have a positive environment to geek out about all things “geek-worthy”. We all owe you a big thanks.

I know you will be back because there aren’t enough pressures in this world that can keep the Big Honkin’ Smile from breaking through the clouds once again. Until that time, take care of yourself and reach out if you need anything.

  42. Jared Says:

    Steve –

I am not going to post everything that I want to say on here, because honestly, it is going to get long and emotional. However, I would love to speak to you about something, and if you don’t check your mail, please do so soon. You have been missed, the outlet for Geek-dom has been missed and we can’t turn and walk away when a brother needs a helping hand. I truly hope to speak with you soon!

  43. Jared Says:

scratch the email, it keeps getting returned, I will shoot you a message via facebook. Ah the wonders of “copy and paste”, what would we have ever done without you oh little right mouse button??!

  44. joe Says:

I am so excited for the return of Geek out Loud!

  45. Markkamp Says:

I am to, there’s so much for Steve to talk about I can’t imagine where he’ll begin. I wonder if he saw Thor before or after he recorded?

  46. H4M Says:

    When does GOL retun?
